Yet another great piece by Aaron Frank, fellow rider, writer and friend. 2013 just keeps on giving, I’ve had such a fantastic year of making images, and one more example here from a Wisconsin trail ride 2013.
I had an extremely fortunate year to meet some really awesome people, and take some incredible rides, making photographs along the way. The results from this work I am proud of, and best of all I had a blast. If you haven’t yet checked out the January issue of Motorcyclist you should.
It was a great pleasure to be given the opportunity to photograph Craig Johnson and his AWD 950 again. His skills with motorcycles, travel, and life are second to nothing. My mobil office had a great view of Cleveland for 5 hours one evening. The view was fantastic, the sun set amazing.
This does not happen very often anymore but a 4×5 film B&W commercial job? Wow! I’m totally in. I guess there are still archival standards out there for some who insist in the old school darkroom, 4×5 sheet film, and the fiber based print. I love it!!!! Bring on the film jobs because that is where my passion for printing started in 1994. The darkroom is what started my love for the perfect B&W print so many years ago and why I operate the business I do today.
Well 2013 is well on it’s way but I would like to take a moment to reflect and thank everyone for such an outstanding 2012. I had the opportunity to work with some great artists and photographers and I had fun doing it! Nothing could be better! I did manage a few days off this holiday to go fly fishing, there is something about standing in the icy river while it’s snowing that is so peaceful. Happy 2013 to my clients, friends and everyone!
It is an honer to have one of my photographs in the collection of Kenneth Paul Lesko Gallery, but even greater is having them display my piece at Beck Center. Currently there is a great show hanging and you should go see it without delay.
My formal training was all in the darkroom, it was there under the safe lights that I really began to love the print, after all it’s the final step in the process of revealing the fruits of our labor to the world. I spent years perfecting my craft, split filter printing, mixing developers from scratch to control contrast, digging through chemical archives looking for that little something extra for an image, manipulating negatives to extend their range, and creating toners to put the final feel into that perfect print. For me printing has always been a passion. I was back in the darkroom 2 weeks ago, it’s alway nice to visit your roots, smell the chemistry in the air, watch the magic happen, and of course print big.

I’ve had the opportunity to work with Peter Larson on several occasions and this piece is absolutely striking to stand in front of. “Refuge” 40×60 is now in Gray’s Auctioneers permanent collection and available for sale.
There is a fantastic show now hanging at Bay Arts “The Bomb” Curator Ross Lesko put together a wonderful collection of work from local favorites and international artists. Stop out to see this show, it is not to be missed. Preston’s work always amazes me and working with him on his prints is always a pleasure.
